At the White House Halloween party on Monday night, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos showed up as The Magic School Bus’s Ms. Frizzle. Whereas the 90s icon is remembered as everyone’s favorite teacher, DeVos’s appropriation of this delightful figure has left the internet seething.

DeVos’s costume choice was especially ironic given the fact that Ms. Frizzle was a champion of public education, diversity, and science. DeVos, however, has decimated protections for campus sexual assault victims, changed federal guidance regarding transgender students, denied the realities of climate change, and mistakenly called historically black colleges the “real pioneers” of school choice, which has its roots in racism and segregation.
The internet was quick to pick up on the hypocrisy of her costume choice, and wasted no time castigating the Trump administration’s least popular cabinet member for dragging the beloved Ms. Frizzle into the swamp of this White House.
