White House Lawyers Started Research For A Possible Trump Impeachment Today

They tried denials.  It didn’t work.  They tried attacking the media and their sources.  No dice.  They even tried making “leaks” the headline scandal – not the real scandals those leaks were revealing – and still, the press persisted.  Now out of options, the Administration appears to be preparing for the inevitable.

According to CNN:

“White House lawyers have begun researching impeachment procedures in an effort to prepare for what officials still believe is a distant possibility that President Donald Trump could have to fend off attempts to remove him from office, two people briefed on the discussions tell CNN.

“…Lawyers in the White House counsel’s office have consulted experts in impeachment during the past week and have begun collecting information on how such proceedings would work, a person briefed on the matter told CNN.”
Only three presidents have faced articles of impeachment in all of American history, and only two in living memory, Presidents Nixon and Clinton.  There aren’t a whole of people with experience on the technicalities that underpin the highly extraordinary proceedings.  And so it’s not entirely unprecedented, on the one hand, for an administration to want to brush-up on the intracacies impeachment.

On the other hand, only a White House that’s under a clear and present threat of impeachment would feel such an urgent need to prepare for that kind of fight.

It’s clear that the sudden appointment of Robert Mueller to head an independent investigation into the Trump Campaign’s ties to Russia has the President and his team rattled.  If Trump decides his best defense now is to hide behind an army of lawyers, it may only be a matter of time before he loses the political war.

Impeachment is, after all, a political exercise assigned to the legislature, not a legal one assigned to the judiciary.  Lawyers can’t sway congressmen.  But Voters can.
