Chances are good that you don’t like Donald Trump and think he’s doing an abysmal job as president. You are not alone.
According to the most recent Associated Press-NORC poll released today, President Trump is now officially the least popular American president of all time. Finally, Trump has achieved something at the level of the superlatives he normally uses to describe everything that he does in P. T. Barnum fashion.
67% of the American public disapproves of Trump and his tenure as President, while only a measly 32% somehow regard him favorably. Then again, this was a president who was elected by a small minority of the population, losing the popular vote by nearly three million, or 2.1%.
If you include the 48% of the U.S. electorate who didn’t bother to vote, that means that Trump was voted in by only 25% of American citizens.
Another statistic from the poll shows that 69% of Americans believe that the country is headed in the wrong direction. That would mean that 2% of Americans don’t blame Trump for everything that they think is wrong with the country.
The people who disapprove of Trump’s performance are starkly and predictably divided along partisan lines with only 25% of Republicans expressing disfavor. One of the few mostly negative attitudes towards Trump amongst his own party is his role in dividing the nation further rather than bringing the country together, with 41% of Republicans saying he’s a divider and only 17% delusionally thinking that he’s a uniter.
The numbers for this question among all voters sits at 67% blaming Trump for dividing the USA, while only 17% believing he’s bringing us all together in a kumbaya moment.
While Trump may have achieved this dubious benchmark through a combination of incompetence, mendacity, arrogance, racism, and greed, there is still plenty of room for his polling numbers to fall further.
While the bulk of the 32% of people who still think he’s doing a good job consists of the President’s true believers, just wait until they get their tax bills, see their health insurance premiums skyrocket, and lose their access to social services after the tax giveaway to the wealthy, and the excessive levels of debt that results from it, bring the reality of what the President is actually doing to their doorsteps.
Can we see a sub-30% approval rating in the near future? Or will Robert Mueller rescue the nation before it can even drop that far? Stay tuned for details.
