The very same “president” who called kneeling black NFL players “Sons of B**ches,” just sat, talked and joked through the age-old military flag song “Retreat,” during an interview with his BFF Sean Hannity last night. You can watch the video below.
The man whose campaign colluded with Russia to steal the election has demanded unflinching loyalty to our flag and National Anthem, even though the black players he lambasted worse than he did neo-Nazis were protesting racial injustice, not the flag itself.
During the same interview in which he disrespected a military tradition as old as our country, he ranted on about how athletes, “Cannot disrespect our country, our flag, or our anthem.”
Trump holds athletes to a high standard than he does himself. As the military outlet Task and Purpose pointed out about “Retreat:”
It’s part of a firmly rooted tradition that predates the American Revolutionary War; the US military tune signals the start and end of the official duty day.
They linked to a military document detailing appropriate protocol for ceremonial military songs, including “Retreat:”
At the end of the work day, Retreat will sound. Retreat is traditionally a time to secure the flag and pay respect to what it stands for. During Reveille and Retreat, those out‐doors should stop activities, and turn in the direction of the installation Flag… and/or direction of the music. Drivers operating a vehicle render respect by safely stopping their vehicle until the music is complete. …Access‐control points shall also stop vehicular traffic. Those in Uniform shall salute the flag and/or in the direction of the music.
In other words, it’s an extremely important patriotic ceremony worthy of respect.
But Trump and Hannity didn’t find it so. Instead, they talked right through it, as the military members behind them stood at attention to salute the flag being lowered at the end of the day.
The Narcissist-In-Chief thought they were playing the song to honor him, or one of his only remaining public allies, Hannity.
“Are they playing that for you or for me?” Trump asked. “They’re playing that in honor of his ratings,” he joked. “He’s beating everybody.”
Trump and his lackey, Vice President Pence, have been stoking racial division over the NFL kneeling controversy, arguing that black athletes protesting oppression are less patriotic than they are.
Trump’s ignorance of his own ceremonial duties, of basic respect to the military and flag, and of the Constitution he swore to defend — as exemplified in his rant against the “disgusting” First Amendment — are not intended as a moral statement, the way an athlete’s kneeling is.
They are just further evidence that he possesses neither the knowledge, nor the competence, necessary to lead our nation as Commander-In-Chief.
