Following a wave of public backlash against Trump calling Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) “Pocahontas” during a ceremony honoring Navajo code talkers, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders opted to defend Trump’s racial slur on a sitting member of the United States Senate.
“I think what most people find offensive is Senator Warren lying about her heritage to advance her career,” Sanders told reporters.
During a CNN panel with host Don Lemon, Republican strategist Rick Wilson struck back at Sarah Huckabee Sanders with a scathing rebuke that left the rest of the panelists visibly stunned.
“Her job is contingent upon her being a serial congenital liar in defense of Donald Trump’s latest outrages… Few Presidents go out and crap on the dignity and legacy of people like these Code Talkers, these heroic veterans and then send their press secretary out to answer questions in a way that isn’t saying, ‘Wow the president regrets what he said today, he made a mistake.’ …Instead, she goes out and she tries to bury people in an avalanche of horseshit everyday, because this is her job.”

Throughout Warren’s career, while she had on occasion alluded to the fact that she is partly of Native American heritage, it was never a factor in determining employment. In fact, Trump’s insistence that she perverted her application to acquire her previous job at Harvard was thoroughly debunked.
The Herald has twice quoted Charles Fried, the head of the Harvard appointing committee that recommended Warren for her position in 1995, saying that the Democratic candidate’s heritage didn’t come up during the course of her hiring. “It simply played no role in the appointments process,” he said. “It was not mentioned and I didn’t mention it to the faculty.”
The Herald later quoted Fried, a former U.S. Solicitor General under President Ronald Reagan, saying, “I can state categorically that the subject of her Native American ancestry never once was mentioned.”
Regardless, the fact that Trump or his White House would stoop to deriding a member of the United States Senate for a cheap laugh – which he didn’t even manage – is classless, tacky, and leagues beneath the dignity of the office of the president.
Warren herself effectively summed up the petulance of Trump’s remark.
“This was supposed to be an event to honor heroes, people who put it all on the line for our country, and people who because of their incredible work, saved countless lives. … It is deeply unfortunate that the President of the United States cannot even make it through a ceremony honoring these heroes without having to throw out a racial slur.”
“Donald Trump does this over and over thinking somehow he’s going to shut me up with it. It didn’t work in the past and it’s not going to work in the future.”
Sarah Huckabee Sanders may feel satisfied defending this indefensible President, but she is only serving to decimate her reputation as she continues to “bury people in an avalanche of horseshit.” She may buy Trump’s nonsense, but America doesn’t.
