Republicans, like Donald Trump, love to cite “voter fraud” as a smoke screen for suppressing the vote. In fact, voter fraud is almost nonexistent and when it is committed, it is usually done so by Republicans. Meanwhile, the voter ID laws Republicans put in place to “prevent” voter fraud are very effective at suppressing poor and minority votes. In fact, the president created an entire Voter Fraud Commission to try to permanently suppress likely Democratic voters. But the joke is now on Republicans.
The former chairman of the Colorado Republican Party, Steve Curtis, was just found guilty of voter fraud, having forged the ballot signature of his ex-wife, who had moved to South Carolina and was no longer eligible to vote in Colorado, in order to steal a 2016 vote for Republicans. His conviction, which could land him in prison for up to three years, is the third for Colorado Republicans charged with voter fraud this year.

On hearing the news, Colorado Democrats took a hilarious victory lap: “[V]oter fraud is so rare that the only person to be charged and convicted of committing voter fraud in Colorado in the 2016 election is…the former Chair of the Colorado Republican Party . . . “
The local D.A. Michael Rourke made a point that transcends politics and strikes to the heart of our fragile democracy:
Voting is one of the most important rights we have as American citizens, and the defendant deliberately stole that right away from Ms. Curtis . . . He saw an opportunity to vote twice in one of the most important presidential elections in recent history and intentionally defrauded our system. No matter the political party you belong to, we must always stand up to those who strip away the rights of others.
Interestingly, a large number of Trump’s inner circle are suspiciously registered in two states.
With as prominent a Republican as Steve Curtis convicted of voter fraud, the American public is wising up.
Stay alert, as our very democracy is under attack. Voter fraud is a sleight of hand Republicans perpetrate on the American people to try to steal away our sacred right to vote — a right into which they themselves are double-dipping.
