With the revelation that disgraced former National Security Advisor has struck a plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller, followed by today’s bombshell that Mueller has issued a subpoena to Deutsche Bank AG to uncover the details of their dealings with Trump, the future of our reality television star’s presidency looks uncertain.
Impeachment and resignation, at one time unthinkable, seem to be growing possibilities. Should that happen, we will be saddled with a prospect that only could have happened through the ludicrous string of events and bad breaks the country has endured over the past year: President Michael Richard Pence.
The historically and legislatively homophobic, regressive, Christian fanatic has managed to maintain a low profile during the Mueller investigation, despite the fact that he has been caught several times lying at the behest of the president.
An inciteful new piece by McCkay Coppins in The Atlantic details Pence’s political rise, and his eventual alliance with a man who ostensibly represents everything he opposes. The bible-thumping, moralistic crusader has gotten into bed with a philandering, mendacious, greedy sexual predator and — at least in public — has no qualms about the fact.
Coppins insists that in private though, Pence has a very different attitude towards his boss, adding that Pence has struggled with his support of Trump, especially in the immediate aftermath of the Access Hollywood tape, in which Trump admitted that he liked to sexually assault women.
Coppins says the tape almost broke Pence, and serious thought was given to the idea of the GOP abandoning Donald Trump and foisting up Mike Pence as their presidential candidate. Somehow, the overtanned conman managed to survive the backlash and Pence was ushered into the Vice Presidency.
While it may have been politically expedient for Pence to remain by Trump’s side, it seems he’s no fan of the president. His wife, Second Lady Karen Pence, reportedly hates Donald Trump and finds him “vile.” Coppins writes of the couples’ reaction:
“He was genuinely shocked by the Access Hollywood tape. In the short time they’d known each other, Trump had made an effort to convince Pence that—beneath all the made-for-TV bluster and bravado—he was a good-hearted man with faith in God. On the night of the vice-presidential debate, for example, Trump had left a voicemail letting Pence know that he’d just said a prayer for him. The couple was appalled by the video, however. Karen in particular was ‘disgusted,’ says a former campaign aide. ‘She finds him reprehensible—just totally vile.'”
While one can’t help but fault the Second Lady — who Mike Pence creepily refers to as “Mother — for her choice in husband, her assessment of the Donald is spot-on. Shame on Pence for deciding to stand by a creature as despicable as Trump. His continued support of our sexual predator leader shows just how hollow and hypocritical Pence’s religious convictions really are.
