This morning, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) exacerbated a seismic rift in the Republican Party when he stated publicly that he believes the women who accused Alabama’s Republican Senate nominee Roy Moore of molesting them as girls.
Now, Moore is firing back on Twitter (below).
Moore is arguably the most extreme member of the most extreme party in modern U.S. history. The white supremacist Christian fundamentalist was twice removed from his post on Alabama’s Supreme Court for refusing to remove a monument to the Ten Commandments in his court (only three of the commandments are laws).
As is common in his party, Moore turned out not to practice what he preaches. After four women courageously came forward with their stories about the Republican nominee, a former Alabama Deputy District Attorney divulged that Moore made a habit of seeking out underage girls to molest.
Lest you mistake McConnell’s move for an attack of conscience, remember that the Senator — who vowed to block all of President Obama’s legislation regardless of it’s benefit to the American people — never makes a move without calculating a strategic play for the Republican Party.
McConnell, himself an Alabama native, recognized Moore as a poison pill for the GOP before the primary and spent considerable resources in a failed attempt to sink his nomination. Now, that the truth of Moore’s reprehensible past is out in the open, the Republican leader knows that continued support for the pedophile will lead to election losses in the future.
That hasn’t softened the blow for Moore, however. The Senate candidate, who has vowed to stay and fight, swung back at McConnell with the below tweet, inadvertently making clear that Moore and McConnell share one thing in common.
Both are concerned only with the ambitions of conservatives and could not care less about the American people they are supposed to serve.
