Governor Rick Snyder (R-MI) has announced when his state will hold the special election to replace Representative John Conyers (D-MI) who announced his retirement this week in the wake of widespread sexual harassment allegations.
The Republican governor best known for allowing the poisoning of his constituents in Flint, Michigan, is holding the “special” election on Election Day 2018 — which is to say, he is refusing to hold a special election, leaving one of the nation’s most Democratic-leaning districts without representation for a full year.
The only thing special about this election is the brazen assault on 750,000 Americans’ right to representation in their own federal government. It is however consistent with the Michigan GOP’s efforts to subvert the democratic process. Michigan is among the most heavily gerrymandered states in the country.
Michigan residents and fair-minded Americans around the country have every reason to be infuriated by this latest partisan trick. And next year, we have the chance to make Election Day truly special by firing the Republican schemers who are set on undermining their own voters’s voices and replacing them with Democrats who will fight for our values.
