The New York Times just revealed a bombshell email admission by a senior member of the Trump administration that Russia has “just thrown the U.S.A. election to him.”
The email was written last December by former Deputy National Security Advisor K.T. McFarland (now awaiting confirmation as ambassador to Singapore) and sent to Thomas P. Bossert, currently Trump’s homeland security adviser, who subsequently forwarded it to other senior advisors in the Trump transition team, including Michael Flynn, Reince Priebus, Steve Bannon, and Sean Spicer.
The context of the email is the reaction of the Trump transition team to the sanctions on Russia which had been implemented earlier in the day by the Obama administration in retaliation for the Russian interference in the presidential election which had already been confirmed by U.S. intelligence agencies by that point.
McFarland was convinced that the sanctions were an effort by the Obama team to discredit Trump’s victory and that they would make it more difficult for the new administration to relax tensions with Russia, “which has just thrown the U.S.A. election to him,” as she incriminatingly described it, according to the Times.
The email and others viewed by the Times belie the efforts by Trump and his legal team to portray Michael Flynn as a lone wolf operating on his own accord outside the boundaries of the transition team, showing that General Flynn was in close contact with other senior Trump officials “both before and after he spoke with the Russian ambassador, Sergey I. Kislyak, about American sanctions against Russia.”
As it says in The New York Times article:
“But it is evident from the emails — which were obtained from someone who had access to transition team communications — that after learning that President Barack Obama would expel 35 Russian diplomats, the Trump team quickly strategized about how to reassure Russia. The Trump advisers feared that a cycle of retaliation between the United States and Russia would keep the spotlight on Moscow’s election meddling, tarnishing Mr. Trump’s victory and potentially hobbling his presidency from the start.”
The article goes on to explain that McFarland confirms in her email that General Flynn would be reaching out to Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak shortly and that “Key will be Russia’s response over the next few days.”
Some other choice quotes from McFarland’s email include the following:
[Mr. Obama was trying to] “box Trump in diplomatically with Russia,” which could limit his options with other countries, including Iran and Syria. “Russia is key that unlocks door.”
[Obama’s sanctions were designed to] “lure Trump in trap of saying something” in defense of Russia, and were aimed at “discrediting Trump’s victory by saying it was due to Russian interference.”
and the coup de gras:
“If there is a tit-for-tat escalation Trump will have difficulty improving relations with Russia, which has just thrown U.S.A. election to him.”
The recipient of McFarland’s email responded with another incriminating quote, urging all of Trump’s advisors to:
“defend election legitimacy now.”
Obviously defending the legitimacy of the election is paramount if you’ve just admitted that Russia threw it into Trump’s lap, but, with the cat out of the bag, it is impossible to defend Trump’s election as legitimate at this point. McFarland’s email implicates just about every senior member of the Trump transition team as at the very least being aware of the effort at collusion with Russia.
Hopefully, as special prosecutor Robert Mueller’s investigation uncovers more details of the inner workings of the Trump campaign and transition, we’ll be able to get a fuller picture of the level of that collusion and exactly who knew what and when they knew it.
Let justice be served piping hot!
