Multiple Children Were Just Shot In Mass Shooting At Elementary School

Once again, barely two weeks after 27 innocent people were slaughtered while they were in church and a month after nearly 60 were massacred in Las Vegas, the United States has been wracked with horrifying gun violence.

A man opened fire at Rancho Tehama Elementary School in northern California. Three people are dead. Three children, including a six-year-old, and one adult have been airlifted to the Enloe Medical Center.

The shooter has been shot and killed by the police and the situation is secure as they investigate at least five crime scenes at the school. Witnesses report hearing “hundreds of rounds.”

The shooter is suspected to have embarked on a spree; police have identified a man who says his truck was stolen and his roommate murdered by the shooter, who is apparently a felon in his 50s’ named Kevin.

This is the 317th mass shooting in the United States so far this year, according to 645 children under the age of 12 have been injured or killed by gunfire this year.

The weekly mass slaughter of dozens upon dozens of innocent people barely even merits a reaction from our bought-and-paid-for Republican Congress. It’s clear that this is simply a reality we’re going to have to accept for the time being – the knowledge that our toddlers have to endure the trauma of shooting drills and the knowledge that anyone could simply walk in with an automatic weapon and unleash an atrocity.

Parents must now sit down and explain to their children that there is no place in the United States that they are safe from the murderous machinations of their own countrymen because a thoroughly irresponsible civilian populace fetishizes the Second Amendment and their instruments of death so obsessively. To explain to their kids that Republican politicians are so beholden to the money of the gun lobby that they’d rather put lives at risk than lose out on a check.

Not even our elected officials are safe from gun violence – but when Rep. Scalise was shot by a deranged man, Republicans called for more guns and spent more tax money on protecting themselves from the consequences of their actions.

Our politicians value their campaign contributions more than they do the lives of their constituents.

The time for thoughts and prayers is long gone. We need decisive action from our elected officials to curb the endless slaughter of the innocent and punishments for those responsible for proliferating these deadly weapons to a grossly irresponsible civilian population.

This is an ongoing story that will be updated as more information develops.
