Yesterday, Vanity Fair published a bombshell report quoting a “longtime friend of the Trumps” saying “This isn’t something [Melania Trump] wanted and it isn’t something [Donald] ever thought he’d win. She didn’t want this come hell or high water. I don’t think she thought it was going to happen.”
Now, the First Lady’s office is lashing out over the report, and they seem to have taken a page directly out of the President Trump’s playbook in the process. A statement from a spokeswoman for the First Lady read:
“Once again part of the liberal media, this time Vanity Fair, has written a story riddled with unnamed sources and false assertions. As a magazine tailored to women it is shameful that they continue to write salacious and false stories meant to demean Mrs. Trump, rather than focus on her positive work as First Lady as a supportive wife and mother. As has been stated on the record many times before, she is honored by her role.”
The blame the liberal media in any instance of a disagreeable story is certainly nothing new for the Trump White House, nor is the plea to focus on accomplishments when there are none to be found. For her part, Mrs. Trump pledged on the campaign to use her post to combat cyber bullying only to abandon the effort before it began.
Anonymous sources can be abused to be certain, but in the hands of responsible and dedicated journalists, like those at Vanity Fair, they can be and have been used regularly to uncover critical information of public interest when no other options are available. Most notably, it was an anonymous source who exposed the lawless corruption in the Nixon White House and brought down a president.
And so it would make sense that the Trump’s are so afraid of them.
