Maxine Waters Just Got The Entire Glamour Awards Audience To Chant ‘Impeach Trump!’

Maxine Waters is nothing if not consistent. The Democratic Congresswoman from California was in New York yesterday to receive a Woman of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award from Glamour magazine and wound up turning her acceptance speech into a Trump impeachment rally.

As one of the President’s most vociferous and persistent critics in Congress, Rep. Waters boarded the impeachment train early, along with a select few other Democratic colleagues like Rep. Al Green (D-TX), Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA) and Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN), all of whom ignored the Democratic congressional leadership who have been urging that they wait until Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller finishes his investigation before instituting any impeachment proceedings.

At the Glamour awards, Rep. Waters avoided the kind of typical uplifting platitudes aimed at the young female audience that the magazine attracts and instead focused on inspiring the crowd to join the progressive fight by engaging with politics directly and ousting the President.

“This is your country, this is your future, and our democracy is at stake. So, not only am I depending on all of the progressives everywhere, but I’m depending on young people. I’m depending on the millennials to do what we know they can do,” Waters said.

Asking the audience to trust themselves when they see that they are being disadvantaged, intimidated, and undermined, Rep. Waters told them to follow their hearts and their minds and step into action.

“You recognize when a leader is irresponsible. You recognize when a leader is dishonorable and disrespectful of you. You recognize when a leader is dangerous, even if that leader is the president of the United States of America,” Waters exclaimed to enthusiatic applause.

“And I want you to have the courage. I want you to know that you can stand up to him or anybody else. For those who say to me, ‘You are asking for something too soon and too early, be careful, don’t jeopardize yourself, don’t say what you’re saying right now,’ but I continue to say, ‘Impeach him! Impeach him! Impeach him!

“Impeach 45! Impeach 45! I didn’t hear you! Impeach 45!”

The crowd joined the congresswoman in an impassioned chant, more suited to a partisan political rally than a fashion magazine awards show. However, with the growing political clout and cultural influence of magazines like Glamour and Teen Vogue bringing an increasing political awareness to an ever younger audience of teen women, Waters choice of topics for her acceptance speech seemed to fit perfectly in the zeitgeist.

Let’s hope that her early start on impeachment efforts and her fearlessness in bringing the message to all available audiences help transform her efforts from a mere wish to a hopeful reality.
