While Trump is the eye of the nihilistic hurricane currently tearing through our government, not enough credit is given to his enablers, the Republicans who are content to simply stand by and watch the destruction in the hopes that their president will rubberstamp their regressive legislation when it crosses his desk.
Chief amongst the complicit is Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI), a man whose lack of spine defies modern science and good conscience alike. He is so focused on gutting social programs and doling out tax cuts to the hyper wealthy that he is willing to turn a blind eye to Trump’s corruption, bigotry, and treason.
If the history books remember Donald Trump as the worst president the country has ever seen, Paul Ryan will be remembered as the lapdog who refused to so much as bark as the reality television star ravaged the United States.
Now, Paul Ryan has added a new disturbing incident to his long resume of the same. Today, a group of children dressed as elves delivered coal to Ryan’s office. Happily singing Christmas carols and generally having fun, they were protesting his lack of action on the DREAM Act, which is now urgent and needed given Trump’s revocation of DACA. Hundreds of thousands of Americans are currently at risk of deportation.
Instead of listening to their complaints, police near Ryan’s office immediately took out zip-tie handcuffs, as if preparing to arrest a group of literal children in elf costumes. Only in a Republican hellscape does this kind of reaction make sense.

Paul Ryan has demonstrated what a coward he is once again. He has an obligation to listen to these children, but more importantly, he has an obligation to push legislation that will help all the DREAMers betrayed by Trump. DACA recipients are hardworking, taxpaying people who have been in this country since childhood. They are just as American as any documented citizen. Congress must act, and it must act now.
