It’s a strange era in American politics when a washed-up reality television star is president and a late night comic is one of the leading voices in the healthcare debate.
Yet here we are, with Trump stomping through the White House night after night and Jimmy Kimmel waging a one-man campaign to save the Affordable Care Act from the nihilistic efforts of the Republican Party.
During the last round of “repeal and replace” efforts, Kimmel made headlines with his moving story about his newborn child’s health issues. He was fortunate enough that he could afford the care his child needed, but his heart went out to the millions who could not. In response, Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) said any new healthcare legislation would have to pass the “Kimmel Test,” meaning no family should be cut off from healthcare due to cost.
The new Graham-Cassidy bill, the latest iteration of Trumpcare, betrays the Kimmel Test, so on Monday the late night host took Cassidy to task publicly for lying. Cassidy shot back by saying Kimmel doesn’t understand the bill. By all accounts, this new legislation is the worst, most destructive offered by the Republicans yet.
In response, Kimmel has launched another attack and displayed a showstopping breadth and depth of knowledge about how and why the new bill is bad.
The Republicans need to be held accountable for the horrible legislation they’re attempting to pass. Kimmel has a platform to help the American people, but it’s up to all of us to do what we can in our own lives. Call your senators.
