After Trump’s inconceivably ignorant comments regarding Andrew Jackson and the Civil War, journalism legend Dan Rather broke his silence on the issue.
Rather wrote a post on Facebook, objecting to the fact that he even had to write a post that would distract from the bigger scandals at hand, like Russia’s interference in our election. “But,” he writes, “the sheer craziness of this obsession by Donald Trump with Andrew Jackson and the Civil War is a carnival act unlike anything I have ever seen at the White House.”
In an interview with the Washington Examiner, Trump claimed that Andrew Jackson “was really angry that he saw what was happening with regard to the Civil War, he said, ‘There’s no reason for this.’” Andrew Jackson died in 1845. The Civil War did not start until 16 years later.
While America must endure a President with little to no knowledge of the history of the country he leads, we are grateful that an intelligent, articulate, and decent man like Dan Rather is there to restore our faith in America
