The Christmas season is almost upon us, which of course means the conservatives have begun banging on about their favorite culture war hobbyhorses. It’s not quite “war on Christmas” time just yet, but unhinged right-wingers have already found something to gripe about. They’ve set their sights on that perennial bugaboo of theirs: Starbucks coffee cups.
Conservatives are outraged by the new holiday cups from the coffee juggernaut, as a new ad from the company depicts what some are interpreting as a loving cartoon lesbian couple happily sharing a cup of joe. It’s a sweet, harmless ad and is exactly the kind of thing that infuriates the homophobic bigots on the right.

Buzzfeed News reported the growing theory that the campaign is meant to be gay. Starbucks didn’t confirm the idea when Buzzfeed reached out, but they did respond with a statement that seems to indicate that the ad does indeed depict a lesbian romance.
“Each year during the holidays we aim to bring our customers an experience that inspires the spirit of the season, and we will continue to embrace and welcome customers from all backgrounds and religions in our stores around the world,” the statement read.
A response from the official Starbucks Twitter account to a user pointing out the lesbian imagery seems to further confirm the theory:
We're happy you enjoy the new campaign, Rufus! ????

The Advocate reported on some of the conservative backlash to the cups, with many of the hatemongers rallying around a #BoycottStarbucks hashtag. For a portion of the country that seems to love denigrating “snowflake” liberals they sure are easily upset by the smallest things. Some of the MAGA crowd raged on Twitter:
The new Starbucks cup has lesbian couple on it. Rom 1:26 “because of this,God gave them over to shameful lust”…

Ban Starbucks for not supporting everyone and pushing one idealism upon us all! Just another Progressive Liberal company owner pushing their divisive agenda upon everyone who is not a liberal or may disagree with gay lifestyle. Let Liberals buy the cool aid from Starbucks! Ban!

This ad is disgusting!

The entire affair is much ado about nothing. Starbucks is simply celebrating diversity, and embracing all of their customers. For conservatives to interpret the ad as a personal attack on their beliefs shows you just how pathetic and insecure they truly are.
