While Republicans made careers out of attacking then-President Obama and Secretary Of State Hillary Clinton when four American diplomats and CIA operatives were killed in Benghazi, Libya, at least both Obama and Clinton bothered to show up at the airport to pay their respects when the victims’ bodies were repatriated.
Yet these same members of Congress who spent millions of taxpayer dollars on the subsequent investigations of Benghazi have remained conspicuously silent over President Trump’s response to the deaths of four American soldiers ambushed and killed in Niger by ISIS-affiliated fighters.
As CNN reported, last week the body of one of the victims, 25-year-old Army Sgt. La David Johnson, was flown back to Dover Air Force Base, but instead of the Commander-In-Chief waiting to greet the coffin with a salute and comforting words for the soldier’s next of kin, Trump was instead on the golf course tweeting about NFL players. Just imagine the reaction from Republicans if Obama had acted this way.
Perhaps even more unimaginable than Trump’s failure to carry out one of the traditional roles of the president in situations like this, is the fact that since the ambush, Trump himself has not even made a single comment on the deaths, despite finding time to tweet about everything else under the sun. Yes, his Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders did offer the customary “thoughts and prayers” to the victims’ families and praised their “ultimate sacrifice in the defense of the freedoms we hold so dear”, but not a peep from the Commander-In-Chief himself about the deadliest combat incident involving US troops since he took office.
Whether this omission is deliberate or simply another example of incompetence from an administration with its priorities so badly out of wack is immaterial in the end. The lack of respect that the president is demonstrating with his silence on the military deaths of soldiers waging his war on terror stands in stark contrast to the facile attacks on the patriotism of NFL players whom he accuses of disrespecting the flag with their protests against police brutality during the Pledge of Allegiance.
It is the epitome of Trump’s vile hypocrisy and should be roundly condemned by both Republicans and Democrats alike.
