Civil war has once again broken out in the Republican Party between the insufferably smug but perpetually spineless NeverTrump faction of conservatives who disapprove of the lack of subtlety with which the Trump camp approaches its bigotry and the coven of sociopathic white supremacist ghouls that Donald Trump unleashed from the political underworld and brought to prominence.
Steve Bannon, the visibly decaying morass of colon polyps and shredded septum flesh who serves as Breitbart editor-in-chief and the defacto leader of the insurgent MAGA Republicans, tore into NeverTrump darling and failed presidential candidate Mitt Romney over his criticisms of Bannon’s candidate for Alabama Senate, accused pedophile Roy Moore.
Speaking at a Roy Moore campaign event in Alabama, Bannon took a questionable route of attack against Romney, who had rightfully denounced Moore over multiple accusations of sexual assault and harassment against teenage girls.
“You hid behind your religion. You went to France to be a missionary while guys were dying in rice paddies in Vietnam.
“You ran for commander in chief and had five sons—not one day of service in Afghanistan or Iraq. We have 7,000 dead and 52,000 casualties, and where were the Romneys during those wars?
“Judge Roy Moore has more honor and integrity in his pinkie finger than your entire family.”
First of all, it is really quite rich for Steve Bannon to be attacking Mitt Romney over military service. While Bannon did serve as a naval officer for several years, he was hardly in the trenches. He quickly got himself a cushy desk job in Washington as a messenger boy at the Pentagon. Since then, the only thing he’s battled has been substance abuse.
Since then, he’s pushed relentlessly for war with the Muslim world, believing the “clash of civilizations” necessary for his apocalyptic visions of the future.
As for Roy Moore’s “honor” and “integrity,” he was known for putting his pride over his own personal safety and was so hated by his troops in Vietnam that he had to sleep on sandbags lest one of his own men roll a fragmentation grenade under his cot.
He has been disbarred by the Alabama judiciary twice for a series of ethical violations and has now been accused of sexual assault and harassment by at least eight women who were in their teens when he pursued her and has even been banned from a mall in Alabama due to his creepy behavior.
In the waning days of the campaign, Roy Moore has declared that all Jews will go to hell for not accepting salvation and called his accusers “criminals.”
That should tell you all you need to know about Moore’s “integrity.” While Mitt Romney is not exactly the poster boy for honor or integrity, coming from the finance world – an inherently amoral and predatory industry – he does at least stand by his religious convictions of pacifism, which is more than Roy Moore can say.
The rest of us can sit back and enjoy the show as the Republican Party continues to tear itself apart.
