Republican candidate and serial pedophile Roy Moore is charging ahead in his bid for the open Alabama Senate seat despite a constant barrage of criticism, much of it coming from within his own party.
Moore has been accused by multiple women of sexual harassment and assault that is said to have occurred when they were teenagers and Moore was in his thirties. Moore’s response to the allegations has been tepid, with him changing his story at times and refusing to outright deny his guilt. The women, for their part, have given credible accounts, and deserve to be believed.
The president gave his tacit endorsement of the sexual predator by urging voters not to cast their ballots for the Democratic challenger Doug Jones. Trump would rather have a man who sexually assaulted a 14-year-old in the Senate than another Democrat. It’s perhaps not surprising given that Trump himself was previously accused of raping a 13-year-old girl.
Now, a powerful voice in Alabama politics has defied President Trump. The Hill reports that Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) has revealed that he has cast his absentee ballot and that his vote didn’t go to Roy Moore.
“No, no, no, I voted absentee. I didn’t vote for him. I voted for a distinguished Republican write-in,” Shelby said in response to reporters questioning him if he voted for Moore.
Shelby refused to reveal who this “distinguished Republican” was, but it’s possible it was acting Senator Luther Strange (R-AL) who was defeated by Moore in the GOP primary. It could also have been Lee Busby, a veteran and former aide to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly. Busby announced a write-in campaign for the seat today.
The only viable option for the people of Alabama is Doug Jones, a stalwart and patriotic American committed to the rule of law. If voters elect Roy Moore, the Republican Party will vacate the last vestiges of its already hollow claim to moral rectitude. It will officially become the party of pedophiles. Senator Shelby has chosen the right side of history by rejecting Moore.
